How to Detach Write Protection from a File

This article addresses how to disable write protection from a file or removable storage item, that will permit you to change the file’s contents. For this, you have to use an admin account to do this. Some kinds of removable storage like CD-Rs, have built-in write protection which can’t be removed.’

How to Detach Write Protection from a File on Windows:

1. Launch “Start” by clicking the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
2. Launch “File Explorer” by clicking the folder-shaped logo in bottom-left side of the Start menu.
3. Visit the File’s location by clicking the folder wherein the file is positioned on the left side of File Explorer Window.
4. Choose the file by clicking on it for which you desire to disable write protection.
5. Press the “Home” menu placed in the upper-left corner of the window and toolbar will be shown at the top of the window.
6. Press the “Properties” logo, placed in the “Open” section of the toolbar, for opening the Properties window.
7. Monitor the “Read-only” box, placed at the bottom of the Properties window. If there is not this button, then make sure that you are on the “General” menu of the Properties window.
8. Press “Apply” then hit “OK”, both buttons are placed on the bottom of the window, for saving your modifications to the file and shutting down the Properties window. Now, you are able to change your file.

How to Detach Write Protection from a File on Mac:

1. Launch Finder by clicking the blue, face-like logo in your Mac’s Dock, to open a new window.
2. Head over to the file’s location by clicking the folder that contains your file at the left side of the Finder window.
3. Choose the file by clicking on that file.
4. Press “File”, placed in the menu item at the upper-left side of the screen then a pull-down menu will be shown.
5. Press the “Get Info” button, placed in the File pull-down menu, for opening the chosen file’s “Get Info” window.
6. If there is a closed lock logo at the bottom-right corner of the window, then press it to unlock the Get Info menu. Now, access your Admin password.
7. Press the “Sharing & Permissions” title, placed at the bottom of the window, for expanding additional display buttons.
8. Search your username, placed under the “Sharing & Permissions” heading, for using it to log into your PC.
9. Alter the file’s permissions by clicking the “Read Only” box, placed at the right of your username until it shows “Read & Write”, then turn off the Get Info window. Now, you are able to change your file.
